-How Donations & Other Money Is Spent at Break Diving, Inc. -

Our unique business model

Break Diving is a unique company. We are founded on the principle that success in life should be accessible to all people, regardless of financial upbringing or status. If someone is willing to work hard, and doesn't expect to get something for nothing, we are willing to guide him or her.

To that end, we offer both paid and no financial cost services to individuals around the world. We also have started a number of scholarship funds for education, world travel, sports, language study, and more.

We are, in addition, raising money for disaster relief and to help find housing for the homeless. We also run a free worldwide online community of thousands and thousands of members, as well as a free personal and business succeess blog for anyone to read. Finally, we offer both free and paid courses in our self-study and live classrooms.

Important to note is our 'volunteer first and always' policy. In other words, if someone wishes to work for us, they must typically first volunteer. After a certain number of volunteer hours, that individual may become eligible to receive a stipend for their work, but must still volunteer a minimum number of hours per month, directly helping those who cannot afford our services. In other words, we only bring people on board who from the beginning are willing to donate their time to the cause without compensation.

Further, each employee's or independent contractor's pay scale is directly related to how many volunteer hours he or she has contributed, and continues to contribute, to the company. The more one volunteers, and continues to volunteer, the more one can be compensated. The more one volunteers, the higher the likelihood that, should a position open up within the company, he or she will get it over someone equally otherwise qualified who applies from outside the company.

This 'volunteer first and always' policy also applies to the Executive Director, i.e. even if on salary, the Executive Director is still be expected to volunteer a minimum number of hours per month to the cause, supervised by another volunteer or board member.

Is the Executive Director (ED) paid?

Currently, no one on staff (including the ED) is paid any type of salary or stipend.

Our ED works currently for a salary of $0, alongside other volunteers who have also spent (and continue to spend) thousands of hours devoted to this noble cause.

The board of directors, however, in concert with IRS approval, has agreed that a tiered payment schematic is fair and reasonable, based on ED'ss education, background, and services offered. For example, when the budget surpasses $5,000, ED will be paid $166.66/month. When the budget surpasses $10,000, ED will be paid $333.33/month. And so on.

Note that the company owes approximately $3,900 in startup loans, currently being repaid in small monthly amounts, usually less than $50/month.

The IRS has approved the above payment schematic as legal, fair, reasonable, and appropriate under the circumstances, and is aware of the loan.

And the rest of the money?

The balance of funds is assigned as necessary:

  • To part-time staff, as determined by the board of directors to be in the best interests of the company, and in direct fulfillment of our mission
  • To our Emergency fund, semi-permanent Endowment fund, Educational Scholarship fund, World Views Scholarship fund, and our Disaster Relief fund
  • To pay for those teachers, students, speakers, and tutors who are not on 'volunteer' status
  • To finance other programs in line with our mission.

Not all funding comes from donations. While many of our services are offered for free to individuals around the world, and need to be subsidized, we do also charge for other services. The profits from these particular services are funneled back into the business, in accordance with IRS policy.
